Intramuros is entirely surrounded by fortifications which were built as the seat of government during the Spanish colonial times, which if you speak Spanish also gave the area its name which basically translates to “within the walls” in English.
Inside the walled neighbourhood of Intramuros, travellers can find a lot of architectural gems which rank among some of the city’s most Instagrammable thay make a lot of people feel as if they are entering into a European enclave.
Intramuros became so significant that it was designated as a National Historical Landmark in the year of 1951. The fortification of Intramuros was also eventually declared as a National Cultural Treasure by the National Museum of the Philippines.
Also, while Fort Santiago is also a major landmark located within Intramuros, it is quite an expensive site and it deserves a post of its own in the future. As such, it is omitted from this guide.
