Walking along the perimeter of Christchurch’s historic Arts Centre, I encounter a sequence of murals that quietly document the city’s recovery after the earthquakes. Painted on temporary construction walls and freestanding concrete slabs, these works transform what could feel like barriers into an open-air gallery.

Against a backdrop of Gothic Revival stone buildings and scaffolding, contemporary street art becomes a tool for storytelling, resilience, and public connection. Many murals cluster near the university, where construction fences became unexpected outdoor galleries. I explore Christchurch’s street art during my 23-Day Unique Itinerary for New Zealand, which balances cities, culture, and slow travel.

The Woman, Life, Freedom mural by Kophie Loaf depicts Mahsa Amini, the Iranian woman whose death in 2022 sparked widespread protests. You can find other “Woman, Life, Freedom” murals in other countries. They are an international rallying call for women’s rights and human dignity.
