Mahabalipuram is one of South India’s most important ancient coastal towns and a major centre of Pallava art and architecture. Its history dates back to the 3rd – 7th centuries CE. Around this time the Pallava dynasty ruled much of present-day Tamil Nadu. The town flourished especially under the reign of King Narasimhavarman I.
