What to see in La Paz, one of the highest cities in the world? La Paz, initially, is not fully appreciated. In fact, the first impact with La Paz can be exhausting. First of all, the city is located at 3,650 meters. The airport, however, is located in the municipality of El Alto, which is over 4,000 meters above sea level. The altitude may play tricks on you: your breathing may become labored, your walking tiring, and you may experience continuous fatigue.

In addition, La Paz is very busy. As a large city in a valley, La Paz is often affected by smog: this makes it even more difficult to get started. These premises are necessary: in fact, despite these factors La Paz is one of my favorite cities in South America, as it offers sensational views and a feeling of local life, unaffected by mass tourism, that is not easily found.

La Paz and El Alto have been two different municipalities for 40 years now. They still seem to be one, and thanks to the Teleferico inaugurated in 2014, they almost are. In fact, the quintessential means of transportation in La Paz is El Telefrico: nine lines quickly connect various neighborhoods in La Paz and El Alto. Can a means of transportation be part of the category of what to see in La Paz? Absolutely! In addition to being definitely useful (traffic in La Paz is really congested), this means of transportation allows for breathtaking views. In particular, the three (of 10 total) lines that connect La Paz to El Alto offer wonderful views. I recommend, therefore, taking the linea roja, plateada and morada because they allow you to go from La Paz to El Alto.
