A. G. Leventis Gallery, Nicosia

A. G. Leventis Gallery, Nicosia

Situated just steps away from Nicosia’s historic center, the A. G. Leventis Gallery stands as a major cultural addition to Cyprus, offering the island’s first comprehensive public collection of European, Greek, and Cypriot art. This institution fulfills the long-held vision of Anastasios G. Leventis, who wished to share his extensive private collection with the public.

The A. G. Leventis Foundation launched the gallery project in 2007 through an international design competition. The winning design, by Feilden Clegg Bradley Studios and J&A Philippou, led to the gallery's opening in March 2014. The building blends respect for artistic heritage with eco-friendly features like enhanced insulation and natural lighting.

Architecturally, the gallery is envisioned as a monolithic stone block, carefully carved to reveal courtyards, terraces, and green rooftop gardens-spaces that echo the intimate, inward-looking nature of Nicosia’s old city. These open areas not only soften the building’s form but also invite visitors to experience art in dialogue with the urban landscape.

The core of the gallery’s holdings consists of two major collections bequeathed by Leventis himself: a distinguished European collection once housed in his Paris apartment, and a Greek collection intended from the start for public display in Cyprus. The gallery also showcases Cypriot art, a focus that the Foundation began to pursue in the 1990s, rounding out its mission to connect Cyprus with the broader artistic heritage of Europe and the Eastern Mediterranean.
