Albertplatz (Albert Square), Dresden

Albert Square is one of Dresden’s most distinctive public spaces, forming an important meeting point between the Inner New Town and Outer New Town. Although technically a square, its circular layout functions as one of the city’s busiest traffic junctions, with nine streets converging here, five tram lines crossing the square, and a tram interchange located within it.

The square was designed in 1817 and completed in 1829. Originally known as Bautzner Square, it was renamed Albert Square in 1871 in honour of King Albert of Saxony. The landscaped garden was designed by Friedrich Bouché and completed in 1875, adding greenery and decorative features to the busy urban junction.

Today, Albert Square is interesting for both its architecture and its monuments. Among the notable buildings nearby are Villa Eschebach, the Erich Kästner Museum, and the high-rise building of Dresden’s public transport company. The square is also decorated with two important fountains by sculptor Robert Diez: “Still Waters” and “Stormy Waves.” Monuments honouring writer and satirist Erich Kästner and playwright and philosopher Friedrich Schiller can also be found in the area.

For tourists, Albert Square is less about a single landmark than about experiencing Dresden’s changing urban character. To the south, Main Street and the Baroque Quarter lead towards the historic centre, while beyond the square begins Outer New Town, known for its alternative shops, cafés, bars, galleries, and nightlife. It is a useful place to pause, admire the fountains and surrounding architecture, and decide which side of Dresden to explore next.
