Altino Arantes Skyscraper, Sao Paulo

Altino Arantes Skyscraper, Sao Paulo

The Banespa Building, also known as the Altino Arantes Skyscraper, holds great significance in the history of Sao Paulo. It proudly stood as the tallest skyscraper outside of the United States for nearly two decades. Furthermore, it held the title of the tallest concrete building in the world until the construction of Marina City I in 1962. Plínio Botelho do Amaral, the visionary designer, drew inspiration from the iconic Empire State Building in New York and the architectural works of Frank Lloyd Wright. The grand inauguration of this architectural marvel took place in 1947, graced by the presence of Governor-Elect Ademar de Barros.

The main entrance of this 35-floor, 17,591-square-mile structure boasts a magnificent crystal chandelier, comprising 10,000 pieces, meticulously replicating the building itself. Visitors can explore a museum dedicated to chronicling the remarkable history of this establishment. The top floor offers awe-inspiring panoramic views of the city, showcasing notable landmarks such as the Serra do Mar Mountains, the Jaraguá Peak, the towering skyscrapers along Paulista Avenue, and the prominent buildings in downtown Sao Paulo.
