American Fondouk, Fes

Exploring the bustling streets of the medina, you might encounter donkeys laden with skins from the tannery, a common sight in the area. Amidst this scene, you'll find a longstanding nonprofit organization, established in 1927, dedicated to the welfare of these working animals-donkeys, mules, and horses. The organization focuses on providing veterinary treatment and support for the often underprivileged families who rely on these animals for their livelihoods.

Visitors are encouraged to explore the facilities, which include 25 stables and other amenities. Vet volunteers offer insightful tours, sharing their knowledge and experiences caring for the equids. Led by an English director, Dr. Gigi Kay, the team works tirelessly to care for around 35 animals at any given time, addressing common ailments such as sores and hernias.

Despite the challenging circumstances, cases of outright cruelty are rare. For many owners, their animals are a vital part of their lives, though they may lack the necessary knowledge to provide adequate care. Some owners travel long distances from surrounding villages to seek treatment for their sick animals at the American Fondouk.

During visits, veterinary staff share stories from their interactions with owners, offering insights into the bond between humans and animals and the challenges faced by these communities. These encounters can be both heart-wrenching and inspiring, as visitors gain insight into the deep bond between these animals and their caregivers.

Created by the French in the early 20th century, Ville Nouvelle (New Town) is a relatively modern central district of Fez. A far cry from the sensory overload provided by the old Medina, this neighborhood was originally designed to accommodate foreigners and affluent Moroccans only.

Still, Fez's Ville Nouvelle is as much 'real' Morocco as any donkey-packed lane in the old city....  view more
