The American Antiquarian Society was founded in 1812 by Isaiah Thomas and it is one of the oldest American historical societies. The building was designed by Winslow, Bigelow and Wadswort in a Colonial Revival style. The library's printed documents and manuscripts record the historical and cultural life of the American people from the first European settlement through the Civil War. The collection includes the rarest volumes from all 50 states.The mission of the AAS is to collect, preserve and make available for study all printed records of what is now known as the United States of America. This includes printed records from first European settlement through the year 1876.The Library collection of the AAS contains over three million books, pamphlets, newspapers, periodicals, graphic arts materials and manuscripts as well as books from all fifty U.S. states
