Apostlehoeve, Maastricht
Nestled on the southeastern slope of the Louwberg, overlooking the Jeker Valley near the Belgian border, the Apostelhoeve stands as the oldest and one of the largest wine estates in the Netherlands. Situated in the south of Maastricht, this historic winery embodies the revival of Dutch viticulture, tracing its roots back to the Middle Ages, when vineyards flourished in the region until the "Little Ice Age" of around 1600.
The estate’s name is likely derived from this historical connection. However, it wasn’t until 1970 that Hugo Hulst, a fruit grower, revived winemaking at the Apostelhoeve by planting vines on the estate. The inaugural harvest in 1973 yielded 1,400 bottles, marking the beginning of a Dutch wine renaissance.
Over the years, the Apostelhoeve has expanded significantly. By 2021, it cultivated over 14 hectares of vineyards, and in 2022, it ceased growing other fruits, dedicating its entire 20 hectares to viticulture. With a steady increase in production, 2025 is expected to see an annual output exceeding 200,000 bottles.
The estate specializes in white wines, crafted from Riesling, Auxerrois, Rivaner, Pinot Gris, and Viognier grapes, planted in soils rich in gravel, marl, and loess. These wines are celebrated for their fresh, mineral-rich character, bearing similarities to the crisp, elegant whites of Alsace. The Apostelhoeve produces seven dry white wines: Müller-Thurgau, Auxerrois, Apostelhoeve Cuvée XII, Riesling, Pinot Gris, Pinot Gris Barriques, and Viognier. Additionally, it offers two sparkling wines: Riesling Brut and Apostelhoeve Cuvée XII Brut.
Beyond its vineyards, the estate houses the Apostelgroeve, a former marl quarry beneath the farm, reflecting the region’s geological and historical depth. More than a winery, Apostelhoeve revives Dutch viticulture, blending tradition and innovation to produce exceptional wines.
