Onbevlekt Hart van Maria (Immaculate Heart of Mary's Church), Maastricht

The Immaculate Heart of Mary's Church (Onbevlekt Hart van Maria) in Maastricht is a striking example of mid-20th-century ecclesiastical architecture. Located in the Mariaberg neighborhood, the church was designed by renowned architect Alphons Boosten in 1948 as part of the newly developed Trichterveld residential area. Unfortunately, Boosten passed away in early 1951, before he could see his vision realized. Construction was overseen by his associate J. Witteveen, and the church was consecrated in November 1952.

The church was designed as a monumental pseudo-basilica cruciform church, with plans for a high choir tower and two west towers. However, due to budget constraints, only the lower part of the round choir tower was completed, while the west towers were never built. This unfinished tower earned the church the local nickname "gasometer", as its cylindrical form resembled a gas storage tank. The building’s brickwork interior, featuring cross rib vaults and rounded arches, gives it a distinctive eclectic character, with a travertine floor in the former sanctuary.

A notable feature of the church’s façade is its lens-shaped rose window with intricate tracery. Additionally, outside the church, there is a stone representation of Mary. Beneath the choir lies a crypt, adding to the building’s unique structural composition. The church was surrounded by beautiful gardens, enhancing its solemn and reflective atmosphere.

The Immaculate Heart of Mary's Church served as a place of worship for decades but was decommissioned in 2011 due to a decline in church attendance. It was subsequently repurposed as a gym, marking a new chapter in its history. While the fate of some original artworks, such as the enamel Stations of the Cross by Woltermans Enamel Art, remains uncertain, the building itself stands as a municipal monument, preserving a piece of Maastricht’s post-war architectural heritage.
