Aquincum Museum, Budapest

The Aquincum Museum, established in 1894, showcases the valuable artifacts unearthed in Budapest's vicinity. Budapest, unlike any other European capital north of Rome, boasts a Roman heritage that can be experienced over a vast contiguous area. The collection housed in the museum consists of millions of pieces.

Despite the ever-changing settlement structure and the passing of time, certain architectural elements such as the aqueduct quadrangle, the amphitheater, and the city wall have endured and remain distinctive features of the city's landscape. The Archaeological Park presently exhibits approximately one-third of the original Civil Town of Aquincum.

Aquincum, a significant Roman city located in the Pannonia province within modern-day Budapest, was established following the Romans' conquest of the land from a Celtic tribe that had inhabited the region since 400 B.C. The ruins of this ancient Roman city were discovered towards the end of the nineteenth century.

Visitors to Aquincum can wander through its streets and explore temples, shops, houses, and thermal baths that reflect the city's past. The majority of Aquincum was constructed between the second and third centuries. The ruins hold intriguing surprises, including a stone tile with a built-in sewer grate, an underground central heating system, mosaic-covered thermal baths, and a marketplace.
