Arbatskaya Square, Moscow

Arbatskaya Square is a historic public space that developed near the western approaches to the old city center. The square took shape in the late 18th century, while the name Arbat was first recorded in 1493. Over time, the area became an important junction linking the Arbat district with surrounding streets and boulevards.

Its appearance changed considerably during the 19th and 20th centuries as buildings were demolished, streets widened, and transport infrastructure developed. One of its most significant buildings is the Khudozhestvenny Cinema, opened in 1909. Initially designed by Nikolai Blagoveshchensky, it was the first purpose-built standalone cinema in Moscow. The building was reconstructed in 1912–1913 by Fyodor Schechtel, who enlarged the auditorium and transformed its appearance. Following another major restoration completed in 2020, the cinema reopened in 2021 with architectural elements restored using Schechtel’s drawings and historical documentation. The square is also associated with two Arbatskaya metro stations. The Filyovskaya Line station opened in 1935 as part of the first stage of the Moscow Metro, while the deeper Arbatsko-Pokrovskaya Line station opened on April 5, 1953. Nearby pedestrian routes lead toward the Old Arbat and surrounding historic districts, making the square an active transport junction.

The early cinema, Soviet metro architecture, and older urban connections represent several stages of the area’s development and provide visitors with contrasting examples of architectural and transportation history.
