Augsburg Zoo, Augsburg

Augsburg Zoo, Augsburg

Augsburg Zoo, originally opened on June 12, 1937, began as a park showcasing German wildlife. Covering 22 hectares, the zoo is home to over 1,200 animals representing 240 species from around the world. It actively participates in 18 European Endangered Species Programmes, supporting species like Grevy's zebras, Rothschild giraffes, Asian elephants, squirrel tamarins, and onagers.

Recent renovations have enhanced the zoo significantly. The bear enclosure was completely revamped and enlarged, allowing visitors to observe brown bears fishing through a glass pane. A new maned wolf enclosure was also added. There are two houses dedicated to big cats: the lion house, which shelters lions, striped hyenas, and fennecs, and the tiger house, home to Sumatran tigers and North Persian leopards. Additionally, the tiger house features a section for nocturnal animals and enclosures for agoutis, pygmy marmosets, and squirrel tamarins.

The tropical hall primarily hosts a variety of birds, including species such as white-eared bulbuls, Sumbawa thrushes, collared doves, Cape rock crows, eclectus parrots, and Bali starlings. Outdoor aviaries are home to species like glossy ibises, boatbills, hammerheads, roseate spoonbills, Chinese bamboo hens, and various ducks. Between 2012 and 2015, a 1,000-square-meter walk-in aviary was constructed next to the tropical hall, featuring European and North African waders like the black-winged stilt, garganey, teal, night heron, and hoopoe, among others.

Opposite the tropical hall and bird aviaries, two enclosures for marine mammals include a pool for South African fur seals, redesigned in 2007, and a seal pool established in 2005, both funded by the Friends' Circle. A relocated lock house from the Goggeles Bridge over the Wertach, dating back to 1922, now serves as a covered viewing platform at the seal pool. Nestled between the two pools is an enclosure for Magellanic penguins.
