Botanischer Garten (Botanical Garden), Augsburg
The Augsburg Botanical Garden boasts over 3,100 plant species and varieties. Notable features include an avenue of spherical robinias lined with decorative flowerbeds, eight themed gardens from the 1985 State Garden Show, and a cottage garden bordered by boxwood that reflects Augsburg's Roman heritage with plants known or spread by the Romans.
In the lower section, the "sunken garden," established in 1965, showcases summer plants like tulips. Stone slabs here store the sun's warmth and release it in the evening, enhancing the garden's microclimate. A checkerboard arrangement of plant islands and Mediterranean species in pots, protected in winter, add to the variety. Tropical and subtropical plants such as ornamental tobacco and geraniums grow in troughs.
The garden also features a neo-Renaissance pavilion designed in the 19th century by Augsburg architect Karl Albert Gollwitzer, originally serving as a leisure spot for the directors of a local spinning mill. Nearby, beds of sage, yarrow, mallow, and catmint flourish, while alpine plants, dwarf shrubs, and smaller perennials thrive in a rock garden with sandstone and limestone. A rock trail displays various Bavarian rock types, including sandstone, limestone, dolomite, granite, and boulders.
Water features and marsh plants are found on the garden’s west side. A pavilion in the rose garden serves as a venue for musical performances and is surrounded by over 2,000 polyantha and floribunda roses and their hybrids, with 280 species and varieties of roses in total.
The Japanese garden, inspired by Kyoto and designed by Yoshikuni Araki, features a pond garden-a type chosen because Augsburg already had a Japanese rock garden with the Rudolf Diesel Memorial Grove. This garden's striking stone arrangement includes 400 tons of granite from the Fichtel Mountains, creating an impressive and culturally distinctive space.
