Avenida El Sol (Sun Avenue), Cusco

Avenida El Sol (Sun Avenue), Cusco

Sun Avenue is one of the major thoroughfares in modern Cusco, connecting the southwest corner of the Main Square with Tullumayo Avenue (Avenida Tullumayo). In many ways, a ride up Sun Avenue is like a trip back in time, bridging modern Cusco with its roots as the capital city of the Inca Empire.

Sun Avenue is lined with hotels, restaurants, and shopping options. It's a busy place. It's one of the main hubs of daily life for the locals, and visitors will find themselves walking here as they connect with many of the best sights in the city.

At around the halfway point on the avenue, you'll see the Convent of Santo Domingo. The convent was built on the site of Coricancha, the most important temple in the Inca Empire. The Sagrado Garden is an open green space that provides outstanding views of the convent.

Several beautiful art installations are found along the length of Sun Avenue. A large mural depicting the Peruvian people's history is one of the most notable.
