Basilica de Santo Domingo (Basilica of Santo Domingo), Cordoba
Basilica de Santo Domingo is a historic Catholic church linked to the Dominican order, present in the region for about four centuries. It remains an active place of worship and devotion to Our Lady of the Rosary of the Miracle. Local tradition says the 16th-century statue of the Virgin arrived in a mysterious crate at El Callao, Peru, before being carried across the Andes by mule.
The current building dates mainly from work carried out between 1857 and 1861, after two earlier churches were damaged by floods from La Cañada. Traces of earlier flood damage remain near the lower foundations. Under Fray Olegario Correa, the church was completed with work linked to Augusto and Agustín Cánepa. Its two bell towers, central dome, smaller tiled cupolas, and blue-and-white ceramics reflect a donation traditionally tied to Justo José de Urquiza.
Inside, visitors find Catholic imagery, side altars, and a devotional focus on the Virgin of the Rosary. The basilica also holds a 1908 pneumatic organ by Jacinto Colombati, assembled partly with elements from an older 1866 instrument. With about 2,100 pipes and 32 registers, it adds an important musical and historical layer to the church’s interior.
