Benrath Castle, Dusseldorf

Benrath Castle, Dusseldorf

Benrath Castle in Dusseldorf is a quintessential example of Baroque architecture, designed as a maison de plaisance, or pleasure palace, for Elector Palatine Charles Theodor and his wife, Countess Elisabeth Auguste of Sulzbach. Created by architect Nicolas de Pigage, construction spanned nearly two decades, from 1755 to 1773, resulting in a sophisticated ensemble that remains one of Dusseldorf’s architectural treasures. The palace complex, proposed for UNESCO World Heritage status, features the main building, surrounded by symmetrical arched wings called the horsewoman's houses (maisons de cavalière), initially intended for servants.

The grounds are equally impressive, featuring two ponds-the Schlossweiher (Palace Pond) in the north and the long, mirror-like Spiegelweiher to the south. Remnants of an earlier structure, including the Old Orangery, add historical depth to the estate. The surrounding 61-hectare park, with its diverse ecosystem, is a haven for nature enthusiasts, showcasing over 80 bird species and 300 types of beetles, as well as rare North American plants.

The palace itself is a cultural destination, with the main building hosting a museum and occasional concerts. Meanwhile, the east wing houses the Museum for European Garden Art, and the west wing is home to the Museum of Natural History. The park, with its meticulously designed paths and lush landscapes, remains open to the public, making Benrath Castle a must-visit for those interested in history, art, and nature, located just 12 kilometers from Dusseldorf's Old Town.

Dusseldorf's Old Beer (Altbier) Walk

Just as London has given us Porter, Dublin – Stout, Burton – the original (English) IPA, and Cologne – Kolsch, Dusseldorf has contributed to the world of beers its signature Altbier. They say, Dusseldorf and Altbier go together like onion rings and blood sausage. Curiously enough, though, this delicious, cool-fermented and malty brew, ranging in color from dark brown to copper, is not...  view more

The area at the confluence of the Rhine and Dussel rivers was on the outskirts of the Roman Empire and settled by Germanic fishing tribes. It is from these small beginnings that the town takes its name. "Dorf" translates to "village" in English. The city of Dusseldorf has since grown far larger than that original eighth-century fishing village.

The scenic Rheinuferpromenade (Rhine Promenade) is the lifeline of Dusseldorf. Currently one of the most beautiful places in the city and a very popular destination for both locals and tourists, this approximately 1.5-kilometer-long embankment was developed between 1990 and 1997 to a design by architect Niklaus Fritschi.
