Bethesdakirche (Bethesda Church), Leipzig
The Bethesda Church (Bethesdakirche) in Leipzig is a notable example of modern church architecture within the city’s rich ecclesiastical landscape. Among more than 90 church buildings in Leipzig, the Bethesda Church stands out as one of the two Evangelical Methodist churches, in contrast to the majority that belong to the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Saxony, which is the largest church community in the area. Situated in the Gohlis district, just north of the zoo and the main train station, Bethesda Church was designed by Leipzig architect Georg Staufert and embodies the principles of the Werkbund and Bauhaus movements with its functional “group building” style that combines parish rooms, a church hall, and living quarters under one roof.
A significant transformation of the sanctuary occurred in 1955 with the installation of an organ featuring 1,098 pipes, which not only enhanced the church's musical capabilities but also altered its interior layout. This renovation included replacing the traditional altar with a new pulpit and communion table. The church also boasts stained glass windows installed in 1954, designed by Max Alfred Brumme, adding a vibrant artistic element to its otherwise modern and utilitarian design.
