Bosque Los Colomos (Colomos Forest), Guadalajara (must see)
Colomos Forest is a vast urban park spanning approximately 92 hectares along the border of Guadalajara and Zapopan. Often referred to as the city’s “green lung,” this oasis blends natural charm with historical significance. Established in the late 19th century to safeguard water sources for Guadalajara, the park eventually evolved into a protected hydrological zone and a cherished recreational escape.
Winding through towering pines, cedars, eucalyptus, and ash, the park offers well-marked jogging and walking routes of 2 km and 5 km, plus dirt trails for more adventurous explorers. A highlight is the serene Japanese Garden, complete with a koi-filled pond, stone bridge, and manicured plantings.
Beyond greenery, visitors can discover “the Castle”, built in 1902 as a water management building and now a cultural center. It hosts art workshops, dance, film screenings, and performances under the shade of mature trees. Other park attractions include duck and bird-filled ponds, a Mexican garden, picnic zones, children’s playgrounds, equestrian trails, and even a disc-golf course-making it a multi-generational delight.
