Broadway Disciples United Church, Winnipeg
Broadway Disciples United Church, located in downtown Winnipeg, stands as a vibrant and welcoming congregation of the Disciples United Church of Canada, a denomination established in 1925. Reflecting the multicultural fabric of the city, it brings together a diverse, multi-ethnic community dedicated to worship, connection, and outreach.
The current church building is a striking piece of modern architecture, designed by James Christie of Moody Moore and Partners, and completed in the early 1970s after a devastating fire in 1968 destroyed the original Gothic structure. Symbolically shaped like the prow of a great ship-an ancient metaphor for the Church-its design rises to the northwest, evoking resilience and spiritual journey. A 43-foot stained glass window by Western Art Glass vividly captures the legacy of the old Saint Stephen's - Broadway United Church and the fire that transformed its path.
Worship at Broadway Disciples is conducted in English and is both accessible and participatory, with scripture, hymns, and the order of service projected onto large screens and shared via Zoom. Music plays a central role in services, led by a diverse ensemble that includes a praise band, youth praise band, choir, organist, pianist, violinist, and soloists.
Broadway Disciples United Church is also deeply engaged in outreach, offering support to newcomers to Canada, advocating for migrant rights, organizing charity concerts and donation drives for disaster relief, and maintaining a compassionate presence for those who are ill or recovering. Rooted in faith and community, the church continues to be a steadfast presence in Winnipeg’s downtown core.
