Brooklyn Public Library / Center for Brooklyn History, New York

Designed to resemble an open book, the Central Branch of the Brooklyn Public Library stands as one of the largest Art Deco structures in the U.S. Originally conceived in the Beaux Art style by architect Raymond Almirall, it underwent a transformation following World War I when the financial constraints of the Great Depression rendered the original design too costly to complete. Architects Githens and Keally reimagined the building in the Art Deco style, resulting in the removal of expensive ornamentation and the demolition of the third floor.

Today, the National Historic Landmark building spans two floors, encompassing a vast area of over 350,000 square feet. Beyond the traditional rows of books, it houses the Center for Brooklyn History-a treasure trove of art and artifacts spanning four centuries that breathe life into Brooklyn's captivating narrative. Through interactive exhibitions, landscape paintings, photographs, portraits of Brooklynites, and captivating memorabilia, the center chronicles the borough's evolving identity. Additionally, the Othmer Library features a splendid reading room adorned with stained-glass windows and intricately carved wooden columns, offering visitors a glimpse into a bygone era.
