Bugis Street, Singapore
Bugis is a district in Singapore that encompasses what was formerly Bugis Street, now situated within the Bugis Junction shopping mall. From the 1950s to the 1980s, Bugis Street gained international renown for hosting nightly gatherings of transvestites and transsexuals. This phenomenon made it a prominent attraction for foreign visitors during that era in Singapore.
In the mid-1980s, Bugis Street underwent significant urban redevelopment and transformed into a retail complex featuring modern shopping malls, restaurants, and nightlife establishments. This new landscape also included regulated roadside vendors in back alleys. Prior to this redevelopment, construction work for the Bugis MRT station involved extensive underground digging, which contributed to the disruption and eventual end of the nightly transgender sex bazaar culture. This marked the conclusion of a colorful and distinctive chapter in Singapore's history.
Today, the original Bugis Street exists as a cobblestoned, relatively wide avenue nestled amid the buildings of the Bugis Junction shopping complex. It is home to the Bugis Street Market, recognized as one of Singapore's largest, most budget-friendly, and likely most bustling shopping destinations.
Popular among both locals and tourists, Bugis Street Market is renowned for its affordability when it comes to souvenirs, accessories, clothing, electronics, housewares, and cosmetics. Many small items, like keychains, postcards, and stationery, can be purchased for as little as $1.
The sprawling market has been recently revamped and now features a covered area, allowing shoppers to enjoy their bargains regardless of the weather. With over 800 shops of various sizes, it stands as Singapore's largest market.
Tips:
Don't miss going up to the 2nd and 3rd floor for lower prices.
Avoid Sundays and evenings – so many people that it's hard to enjoy.
Bring a light-weight backpack to bring all your souvenirs while making it easier on your arms.
