Burbidge Building, Halifax
The Burbidge Building, formerly known as the Medical Science Building, is the oldest structure on the Dalhousie University campus in Halifax. Designed by architect Andrew R. Cobb, the building was constructed between 1922 and 1923 to house various medical science faculties. Its architectural style is defined by the use of tapestry brick, complemented by granite and Wallace stone, giving it a distinguished historical appearance that reflects the early 20th-century academic construction trends.
Originally, the building accommodated the faculties of Pharmacology, Physiology, and Biochemistry, playing a pivotal role in Dalhousie’s medical education. In 1970, the structure was renamed in honor of George A. Burbidge, the first Dean of the College of Pharmacy, marking its official transition into the center of pharmaceutical education at Dalhousie University.
The Burbidge Building has undergone multiple renovations to meet evolving educational and research needs. In 1978, a third floor was added, expanding classroom and laboratory space. Further modernization in 2001 introduced new seminar rooms, larger classrooms, a state-of-the-art Skills Lab, and the Pharmacy Library, reinforcing its role as a key academic hub for pharmacy students and researchers.
Today, the Burbidge Building continues to serve as the home of Dalhousie’s College of Pharmacy. It remains one of the university’s most historically significant buildings, blending its rich architectural heritage with contemporary educational facilities. Through its transformation over the years, the Burbidge Building stands as a testament to the university’s long-standing commitment to excellence in pharmaceutical education and research.

Halifax Introduction Walking Tour
Halifax is located on the ancestral lands of the Mi'kmaq who lived in the area long before Europeans arrived. Mi'kmaq called the area "Great Harbor". The city itself was established by the British in 1749 in violation of treaties with the Mi'kmaq. The establishment of the city led to Father le Loutre's War, otherwise known as the Anglo-Micmac War.
