University of King's College, Halifax

The University of King's College, located in Halifax, is a public liberal arts university renowned for its strong academic traditions and unique interdisciplinary programs. Established in 1789, it holds the distinction of being the oldest chartered university in Canada and the oldest English-speaking university in the Commonwealth outside of the United Kingdom.

At the heart of King’s undergraduate experience is the Foundation Year Program (FYP), an immersive curriculum that guides students through pivotal intellectual developments by engaging with great books and seminal ideas from various eras. In addition to FYP, the university offers highly regarded upper-year interdisciplinary programs, including contemporary studies, early modern studies, and the history of science and technology.

King’s also houses a prestigious journalism school, attracting students globally for its intensive graduate programs in journalism, writing, and publishing. This school has built a reputation for its rigorous training and commitment to storytelling in various media forms.

The university was originally founded as King’s Collegiate School in Windsor, Nova Scotia, in 1788. However, after a devastating fire in 1920, the institution relocated to Halifax with the support of Dalhousie University. Since then, King’s has maintained a close academic partnership with Dalhousie, sharing a Faculty of Arts and Sciences and granting students full access to Dalhousie’s facilities and services. Despite this collaboration, King’s remains an independent institution with its charter and governance.

Situated adjacent to Dalhousie, the University of King's College continues to uphold its legacy of academic excellence while fostering an intellectually vibrant and tight-knit scholarly community.
