Callejón Angosto (Narrow Alley)/Calle de las Sombrillas (Umbrella Street), Cartagena
Formerly known as Narrow Alley, this is indeed one of the narrowest streets in Getsemani. In recent years, in a bid to add colour to its coral-stone walls, the alley-like many other places around the world-has embraced a new look with the help of a familiar accessory: the umbrella.
One of the first places in Colombia to adopt such a display, the alley was subsequently renamed Umbrellas Street, becoming one of Cartagena’s most Instagrammable spots. The combination of colourful umbrellas suspended overhead, brightly painted houses and street art makes it undoubtedly one of the most picturesque locations in the city, especially when illuminated at night.
The umbrellas have proved a welcome addition from both artistic and practical standpoints, providing much-needed shade from the scorching midday sun as well as some shelter during sudden tropical downpours.
Once you’ve taken your must-have picture, consider leaving a small tip in the box at the end of the street. Despite its popularity with visitors, this remains a predominantly residential corner of Getsemani, and the contribution helps acknowledge the local community that maintains the colourful display.
