Centre Marie de l'Incarnation, Quebec City

Centre Marie de l'Incarnation, Quebec City

Marie Guyart, known as Blessed Marie de l'Incarnation, hailing from Tours, France, is renowned as the founder of the Ursuline Order in colonial New France. She holds the distinction of establishing the first girls' school in North America. This museum is dedicated to preserving her missionary endeavors and her life, spanning from 1599 to 1672. Inside, you'll find a permanent collection comprising memoirs, rosary beads, portraits, and personal items that offer valuable insights into the historical context of New France during the 17th century.

Visitors also have the opportunity to engage in prayer within the chapel where she rests, and they can purchase books at the onsite shop. The chapel's interior boasts some of the most exquisite wood carvings from the 18th century that have endured in Quebec. Adjacent to the chapel, you'll find the oratory of Marie de l'Incarnation, which serves as her final resting place. It's worth noting that Marie was canonized by Pope Francis on April 2, 2014, alongside François de Laval, who was the first Bishop of Quebec.

Historians recognize Saint Mary of the Incarnation as a trailblazer, particularly in the field of education. However, above all, she is remembered as a woman of unwavering faith, wholeheartedly dedicated to Jesus Christ and the well-being of others. Explore further into the life, writings, and spiritual journey of this remarkable woman during your visit.

The museum offers a range of services, including guided tours, the opportunity for prayer at Marie's tomb, the sale of both new and old books, and a warm spiritual welcome for those who seek it.
