Centro Monsenor Romero (Monsenor Romero Center), San Salvador

At the Central American University, the Monseñor Romero Center stands as a moving tribute to the life and legacy of Archbishop Óscar Romero. This place not only honors him, but also shines a light on the countless victims of El Salvador’s civil war, including the six Jesuit priests who were murdered right here on the university campus in 1989.

Free guided tours-offered in both English and Spanish-walk you through exhibits that tell the powerful story of Monseñor Romero’s mission, his courage, and the impact he had on the country. The tour also pays tribute to the Jesuit priests and two women, Elba and Celina Ramos, a mother and daughter, who were killed alongside them.

You can visit the actual scene of the crime, now transformed into a peaceful rose garden, and step inside the preserved room where Elba and Celina were murdered. Their personal belongings, photographs, and documents are on display, along with honors recognizing their lives and sacrifice. It’s a deeply human experience-one that brings the events of the civil war into vivid, emotional focus and helps keep their memory alive.

If you’re interested in the recent history of El Salvador, this is a must-visit.

Tip: Be sure to stop by the chapel, which features evocative works by Salvadoran artist Fernando Llort, adding yet another layer of reflection to your visit.
