Iglesia de los Santos Ninos Inocentes (Church of the Holy Innocents), San Salvador

The Church of the Holy Innocents is a Roman Catholic parish honoring the Holy Innocents, the children martyred in biblical times by King Herod. It was built on land donated in 1954, initially as a rural chapel under the care of the Sanctuary of Our Lady of Guadalupe. In 1982, it was administratively separated and elevated to a parish by 1989, under the pastoral guidance of the Somascan order.

It serves as the religious center of Antiguo Cuscatlán, a municipality that holds its patronal feast on December 28 in commemoration of the Holy Innocents. The celebration draws locals and visitors who take part in processions carrying child images or statues-often accompanied by ex-votos of gratitude-seeking blessings and protection. The day blends solemn Masses with lively music, prayers, and rituals rooted in colonial tradition, while street fairs with traditional foods and handicrafts add a festive touch.

Beyond December, the church remains an active spiritual hub, open daily with pastoral care and regular Mass times.
