Chapelle des Lazaristes (Chapel of the Lazarists), Tours
The Chapel of the Lazarists (Chapelle des Lazaristes), nestled in the heart of Tours, stands as a significant architectural and historical gem. Built in 1860, this chapel was designed by the diocesan architect Gustave Guérin, known for his meticulous craftsmanship and attention to detail. The chapel is dedicated to the Lazarists, a religious order founded in the 17th century by Saint Vincent de Paul, reflecting the chapel's deep-rooted spiritual heritage.
Located on Général-Meusnier Street, near the esteemed Museum of Fine Arts (Musée des Beaux-Arts), the chapel is strategically positioned in a vibrant and historic district. This area is renowned for its medieval half-timbered houses and grand private mansions, which echo the city's rich past and make it a popular destination for tourists.
One of the chapel's most striking features is its freestone facade, crowned by a niche that houses an imposing statue of Saint Vincent de Paul, masterfully sculpted by Trodoux. The interior of the chapel is equally impressive, adorned with extensive painted decorations and a mosaic floor in the choir area, enhancing the overall elegance of the space.
Since 2010, the ownership of the chapel has transferred to the Romanian Orthodox Metropolis of Western and Southern Europe (MOREOM), which has taken significant steps to preserve this historical structure. MOREOM is not only committed to restoring the chapel but also to revitalizing it as a cultural hub. Plans are underway to host religious services and a diverse cultural program aimed at showcasing the rich religious heritage of Tours to both faithful and curious visitors.
