Chiesa dei Santi Niccolo e Cataldo (Church of Saints Nicholas and Cataldo), Lecce

The Church of Saints Nicholas and Cataldo is an example of Apulian Romanesque architecture nestled within the city’s cemetery just outside the ancient walls. Founded in 1180 by the Norman Count Tancredi d’Altavilla alongside an adjacent monastery, the church stands as a historical and architectural milestone.

Historically, the complex was initially entrusted to Benedictine monks and later passed to the Olivetan order, reflecting its continued religious importance until the early 19th century. After Napoleon’s reforms, the site transitioned through various educational and social functions, eventually becoming home to Lecce’s Faculty of Cultural Heritage in the 1980s.

The church retains key Romanesque elements such as its notable rose window and main entrance, which were preserved even after the 1716 Baroque renovation by Giuseppe Cino. This update introduced elaborate decorative touches typical of Lecce’s Baroque architecture.

Inside, the church features a traditional basilica layout with three naves and a central dome supported, which is decorated with an image of the Virgin’s coronation. The interior walls display frescoes from the 15th and 16th centuries that depict the lives of the saints, blending spiritual narrative with artistic expression.

Adjacent to the church, a 16th-century cloister with a 17th-century canopy and twisting columns provides a peaceful and historic setting.

However, it first steps firmly into the record in the 3rd century BC as Lupiae under Roman control. The name is thought to come from lupus, the Latin word for wolf, recalling the animals that once...  view more

Lecce's Baroque Churches Walking Tour

Lecce isn’t shy about its reputation-it’s often called the “Capital of Baroque,” and one stroll through the old town makes it clear why. This southern Italian city turned its soft local limestone, Lecce stone, into an architect’s playground. Elaborate façades, swirling details, and sculptures bursting from the walls made the 17th century feel like one long design competition. And with...  view more
