Torre di Belloluogo (Belloluogo Tower), Lecce
The Belloluogo Tower, a medieval fortified tower in Lecce, stands as an example of late Angevin military architecture. Although tradition attributes its construction to the 14th century by Gualtiero of Brienne, the exact date remains uncertain.
The tower's cylindrical shape and its surrounding water-filled moat contribute to its historical significance, offering a glimpse into the defensive measures employed during the medieval period. Similar in style to the Park Tower, Belloluogo was once the residence of Maria d'Enghien, Countess of Lecce and Queen of Naples, where she spent her final years.
The tower retains several rooms, including a richly frescoed chapel, with frescoes dating back to the early 15th century. These vivid works, attributed to the Galatinese School depict scenes from the life of Saint Mary Magdalene, the four evangelists, and seven prophets.
While some of the tower's original architectural features, such as its merlons and machicolations, have eroded over time, traces of these elements can still be seen at the summit.

However, it first steps firmly into the record in the 3rd century BC as Lupiae under Roman control.
