Chiesa di San Vigilio (San Vigilio Church), Siena

The Church of San Vigilio is a historically significant sanctuary tucked away in the narrow streets of Siena's medieval center, just a short walk from Campo Square. Dedicated to Saint Vigilius, the 4th-century Bishop and martyr of Trento, it was originally founded in the 11th century as a monastic church under the Camaldolese order.

Following the expulsion of the monks in 1420, the church was eventually passed to the Jesuits in 1556, who extensively remodeled the building into its modern layout over the next two centuries. When the Jesuits were temporarily suppressed, the Vallombrosan order acquired the property and had the elegant Classical façade rebuilt in 1759. In 1816, the complex was entrusted to the University of Siena, today serving as its official university chapel.

The restrained exterior gives little hint of the richly decorated Baroque interior. Graceful arches, white stucco ornamentation, and finely decorated side chapels create an intimate yet elegant atmosphere. One of the principal artistic highlights is a remarkable cycle of fifteen canvases by Raffaello Vanni depicting the Last Judgment. Other chapels preserve masterworks by Sienese and Italian painters, including Dionisio Montorselli, Francesco Vanni, Baldassare Franceschini, and Mattia Preti. Notably, the Taja family chapel houses a collection of exquisite bronze sculptures completed directly by the world-famous workshop of Gian Lorenzo Bernini.

Today, the church stands as a brilliant monument to Counter-Reformation Baroque style and a vital academic hub, offering visitors a peaceful retreat filled with high-art treasures.
