Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, Pittsburgh

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh, located in the Allegheny Center neighborhood on the Northside of Pittsburgh, was established in 1983 within the premises of the former Allegheny Post Office, which was generously provided to the museum by the Pittsburgh History and Landmarks Foundation. Situated in what was once known as Allegheny City, the museum found its home in this historic building.

By 1991, the nearby Buhl Planetarium building had become vacant, as it was succeeded by the Carnegie Science Center. In the early 2000s, plans emerged for the museum to expand beyond the confines of the old Beaux Arts-style post office and into the adjacent Art Deco Buhl Planetarium. This expansion project, spearheaded by Koning Eizenberg Architecture, Inc., aimed to link the two historic structures via a contemporary glass addition, which would span the former Allegheny Square street. This street was subsequently closed and repositioned to accommodate the addition's construction.

The Children's Museum of Pittsburgh offers a diverse array of programs catering to children's interests, spanning from activities like dance and rocket building to quilting and robotics. Guest artists conduct workshops covering various artistic mediums, such as pottery, Japanese paper cutting, animation, and painting. Additionally, the museum's extensive outreach program provides performances, workshops, after-school activities, artist-led sessions, and festival programs tailored for schools and community groups throughout the year.
