Chrabliyine Mosque, Fes
Established during the 14th century under the Marinid dynasty but significantly renovated between 1792 and 1822., this mosque stands proudly on the bustling main market street of Fes el-Bali. The neighborhood surrounding it is also known as Chrabliyine, after the traditional Moroccan women's shoe, "cherbil", which the local shops specialized in and still do to some extent today.
While the minaret and the mosque entrance retain their original Marinid features, much of the structure reflects the Alaouite restoration. The minaret, in particular, is a striking example of medieval Moroccan-Andalusian architecture, making use of the intricate "sebka" pattern (resembling palmettes or fleur-de-lys shapes), polylobed arch motifs near the base, merlons at the top, and multicolored mosaic tiles filling the gaps. Meanwhile, the main entrance, directly beneath the minaret, is overlooked by a canopy of finely carved wood.
Across the street lies a "mida'a" used for ablutions, featuring an inner courtyard accessed through a curved corridor from the street entrance.
