Church of Saint Francis, Split
Located on the Western part of the Riva, the Church of Saint Francis stand proudly upon an ancient early Christian site, where a small Church of Saint Felix, a martyr from the era of Diocletian, once rested. In the 13th century, the Church became the dwelling place of the Little Brothers of Saint Francis.
Among the Church's remarkable artworks, the Gothic Crucifix painting by Blaž Juraj of Trogir from the early 15th century holds immense value. Additionally, there is a fascinating sarcophagus depicting the Crossing over the Red Sea, an integral part of the sacral artwork hailing from Roman times.
Adjacent to the Church stands the Franciscan monastery, boasting a captivating 13th-century cloister and an opulent library housing over 3000 books, some dating back to the 16th century.
Within the sacred walls of the Church and the Monastery lie the tombs of illustrious citizens of Split. Notable figures like Marko Marulić, the father of Croatian literature, and Ante Trumbić, one of Croatia's greatest politicians, find their eternal rest here. Notably, Ante Trumbić's sarcophagus stands as a masterpiece created by the renowned artist, Ivan Meštrović.
