Sulphur Baths, Split

Sulphur Baths, Split

If you stroll along Marmont Street in Split, you'll come across a captivating sight-an old building constructed above a natural sulphur spring. This unique location houses the Sulphur Baths, where you can indulge in the tradition of bathing in mineral-enriched waters, just as the ancient Romans did centuries ago. Along with various other sulphur spas scattered throughout the region, these baths offer a rejuvenating experience that not only soothes the body but also offers picturesque views as most of the spas are set outdoors.

The roots of the Sulphur Baths date back a staggering 17 centuries, with their origin linked to the construction of the grand Palace of the Roman Emperor Diocletian. The healing powers of the sulphurous waters have been employed for traditional medicinal purposes since those ancient times. During the early 20th century, these baths reached the pinnacle of recognition and popularity when the sulphur spring was declared to be the source of Europe's finest medicinal mineral water.

For years, the people of Split and visitors from far and wide reveled in the therapeutic benefits of the Sulphur Baths. Balneology and climatotherapy, the study and use of natural baths and climates for medicinal purposes, were once highly favored practices in the region.

With the advent of the 1990s, the commercial and medical utilization of the mineral-rich waters in Split came to a halt. The Sulphur Baths gradually lost their significance as the city embraced contemporary healthcare practices. Despite their decline, the historical and cultural value of these baths remained intact, serving as a testament to the ancient wisdom of the region.
