Church of St. Christopher (Chiesa di San Cristoforo), Lucca

The Church of Saint Christopher (San Cristoforo) in Lucca is a deconsecrated Romanesque and Gothic-style church located on Fillungo Street (Via Fillungo), the main street of the city's historic center. First documented in 1053, the church played a significant role in the political life of medieval Lucca, serving as the headquarters of the consuls of the Cause Lucchesi.

The current structure was largely rebuilt in the 12th century atop an earlier building. It was designed with three naves separated by pillars and a single apse, with a bell tower standing at the southeastern corner, likely dating to the 13th century. The lower portion of the façade, featuring alternating white and dark stone, reflects the stylistic influence of Pisan architecture. The upper façade, including a prominent rose window, was added in the 14th century.

During the 15th century, the church underwent further modifications, including the addition of vaults covering the naves. In the Baroque period, elaborate stucco decorations and altars enriched its interior. The first recorded modern restoration took place between 1843 and 1844.

A dramatic transformation occurred in 1939-1940 when the church was deconsecrated and repurposed as a memorial to honor soldiers from Lucca who perished in war. This renovation led to the removal of all plasterwork, Baroque altars, and 15th-century vaults. The names of the fallen were engraved on the nave walls, reinforcing its new role as a commemorative space rather than a place of worship.

Today, the former Church of Saint Christopher no longer serves religious functions but has found a new life as a venue for cultural events and exhibitions, preserving its historical and architectural legacy within the city of Lucca.
