Church of the Covenant Presbyterian, Greensboro

Church of the Covenant Presbyterian, Greensboro

Built in 1914 to replace a modest wooden church from 1906, the Church of the Covenant Presbyterian is a cornerstone of Greensboro’s College Hill neighborhood-both architecturally and spiritually. Designed by prominent local architect Harry Barton, the current Neoclassical Revival sanctuary features striking full-height Ionic columns and symmetrical facades that gracefully anchor its corner lot at South Mendenhall Street and Walker Avenue.

The church's origins trace back to May 1906, when sixty-nine members petitioned the Orange Presbytery to establish what was then called Walker Avenue Presbyterian Church. It was built to serve the nearby academic communities of what is now the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and Greensboro College. By 1909, the church had adopted its current name, Presbyterian Church of the Covenant.

Over time, the church has expanded to meet both spiritual and community needs. The original wooden sanctuary was relocated to Glenwood Presbyterian Church, and Barton’s brick sanctuary became the heart of a growing complex. A three-story Religious Education Wing and a two-story Youth Education Wing were later added, housing everything from classrooms and a parlor to artist studios, nonprofit offices, and wellness programs.

Inside the sanctuary, thoughtful renovations have preserved its historical charm while enhancing functionality. The space was restructured to increase seating capacity to 635, the pulpit and Aeolian-Skinner organ were relocated, and bespoke chandeliers were hand-forged in Raleigh. Modern additions such as an elevator and wireless sound system ensure accessibility and contemporary worship experiences.

Today, the Church of the Covenant continues to blend tradition with progressive faith practice. Sunday services range from traditional gatherings at 11:15 a.m. to an early 9:00 a.m. service that integrates local folk musicians, open dialogue, and reflection-welcoming both lifelong Presbyterians and spiritual seekers alike.
