Grace Church, Greensboro

Grace Church, Greensboro

Grace United Methodist Church, located on West Friendly Avenue in downtown Greensboro, is a vibrant and inclusive congregation with deep historical roots and a forward-looking mission. Chartered in 1891 by twenty-two members of the Methodist Protestant Church-a denomination known for championing laity leadership and early ordination of women-Grace has long stood for equality, service, and community engagement.

The current church building, completed in 1925, is one of Greensboro’s most architecturally notable religious landmarks. Designed by renowned New York architect Hobart Upjohn in the Georgian style, it features elegant proportions and classic detailing that make it a favorite among wedding venues. It’s remembered as the wedding site of Hollywood legend Charlton Heston.

Grace is more than its historic building-it’s a vibrant center for worship, music, youth programs, and outreach. Rooted in faith and service, it has supported key local efforts like Greensboro Urban Ministry and Habitat for Humanity, and now partners with Guilford Child Development to offer early education and childcare to immigrant and refugee families.

As a Lighthouse Congregation within the United Methodist Church, Grace opens its doors to anyone seeking a spiritual home-especially those navigating change or disaffiliation. In a city center that continues to evolve, Grace United Methodist Church remains steadfast in its commitment to be everything an urban church needs to be: welcoming, rooted in love, and actively engaged in building a better future for all.
