City Hall, Orlando

City Hall, Orlando

Orlando City Hall serves as the main administrative center for the City of Orlando. This modern, 9-story building, constructed by Lincoln Property Company, was completed in 1992. It's situated in the heart of downtown Orlando, within the CNL Center City Commons complex, at the intersection of South Orange Avenue and South Street. The construction process was managed by assistant city attorney Lew Oliver, with funding through revenue bonds.

The hall's design aimed to integrate civic, commercial, and artistic elements to revitalize downtown Orlando. It blends traditional regional designs with classical urban structures. The City Hall is surrounded by a spacious, landscaped plaza that serves both as a formal civic area and a social hub for Orlando residents.

Architecturally, the building is notable for its 120-foot copper dome and elegant granite aggregate precast concrete panels, echoing the grandeur of historical civic buildings. The main entrance leads into the 'Great Room', a rotunda-like area functioning as the city's primary gathering space. Here, a striking grand staircase ascends to the city council chambers.

Before this building, the site hosted the old city hall, designed by Richard Boone Rogers. This older hall, which had replaced the Orlando Public School Building as the city government's base in 1924, was demolished on October 24, 1991, to make room for the new structure. The demolition was filmed and included in the 1992 movie "Lethal Weapon 3."
