City-Hochhaus (City High-Rise), Leipzig

City High-Rise (City-Hochhaus) is a prominent 36-story skyscraper in Leipzig. Standing at 142.5 meters (468 feet), it is the tallest multistory building in the city and sits near the eastern part of the inner city ring road in the Mitte district. Designed by the renowned architect Hermann Henselmann, the tower was constructed between 1968 and 1972, and its unique shape resembles an open book.

Originally, City High-Rise was part of the University of Leipzig's campus at Augustusplatz. However, it was later sold by the state government of Saxony and is now owned by the U.S. investment bank Merrill Lynch. Between 1999 and 2002, the building underwent a comprehensive renovation, which included replacing its original aluminum sheathing with grey granite. The tower now hosts private tenants, including the public broadcaster MDR, the European Energy Exchange, and a restaurant.

Locally nicknamed ''Wisdom Tooth" (Weisheitszahn) due to its shape, or ''University Giant'' (Uniriese) reflecting its former function, City High-Rise offers a panoramic view of Leipzig due to its central location and height. A notable feature is the viewing platform on the 31st floor, accessible via a staircase from the restaurant level, which provides expansive views of the city from 120 meters (390 feet) above ground. The platform offers a broad perspective of Leipzig, with only the spire obstructing views to the east-southeast.

During the GDR era, the Panorama Café operated on the 26th and 27th floors but closed in 1991. Following the renovation, a new panorama restaurant opened in 2002 and was later rebranded as "Plate of Art" in 2007, redesigned by architect Rüdiger Renno and designer Till Brömme. The City High-Rise continues to be a significant architectural and cultural landmark in Leipzig, blending historical elements with modern utility and design.
