City Place I, Hartford

City Place I, Hartford

City Place I is a landmark skyscraper located on Asylum Street in downtown Hartford. Rising to a height of 537 feet (164 meters) over 38 stories, it is the tallest building in the state and the tallest in New England outside of Boston-surpassing even the historic Travelers Tower by about ten feet.

Completed in 1984, the building was designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. It showcases a modernist aesthetic with a structural system based on a steel-frame perimeter tube anchored into New England bedrock. Notably, it includes three subterranean parking levels hewn directly from the stone beneath. The façade combines imported granite with precast concrete panels, a practical design choice that allows for streamlined construction while preserving visual elegance.

Primarily an office tower, City Place I also includes restaurants and retail establishments on its lower floors, helping integrate it into the pedestrian life of downtown Hartford. As both a commercial hub and an architectural icon, the building remains a central fixture of the city’s skyline and business district.
