Connecticut Science Center, Hartford
The Connecticut Science Center, located on the banks of the Connecticut River in downtown Hartford, is a landmark of both architecture and education. Designed by world-renowned architect César Pelli, the nine-story, 154,000-square-foot building opened in 2009 as part of Adrien’s Landing redevelopment project-one of the largest urban renewal efforts in Hartford since the 1970s. Built on what was once a surface parking lot near I-91, the center transformed an underutilized space into a vibrant hub for science and learning.
Inside, the museum offers over 40,000 square feet of interactive exhibits designed to engage visitors of all ages. With more than 165 hands-on experiences, four educational labs, a KidsZone for younger children, and a state-of-the-art 3D digital theater, the center brings subjects like physics, astronomy, geology, and forensics to life. Regularly rotating exhibitions, daily programs, and live demonstrations keep the experience fresh and dynamic.
The Science Center also reflects a strong commitment to sustainability. It’s the first science museum in the country to power its operations primarily with an on-site 200-kilowatt fuel cell system, developed by UTC Power. This fuel cell, using a clean electrochemical process rather than combustion, helps the center meet its energy needs while supporting its Gold Level LEED certification as a green building.
Established with a mission to inspire young minds and revitalize Hartford’s urban landscape, the Connecticut Science Center is more than a museum-it’s a beacon for education, innovation, and smart urban development.
