Croatian Museum of Naive Art, Zagreb

The Croatian Museum of Naïve Art, located in Zagreb, showcases the unique works of 20th-century naïve artists. Situated on the first floor of the historic 18th-century Raffay Palace, this museum spans 350 square meters (3,800 square feet) in the Gornji Grad area, on Cyril and Methodius Street. Its collection includes a variety of paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints, predominantly from Croatian artists but also featuring notable international names in this art style. The museum regularly hosts themed and retrospective exhibits of naïve art, along with expert discussions, and interactive workshops and play areas for educational purposes.

Naïve, or primitive art, is a prominent category within 20th-century art. In Croatia, this art form initially emerged from the creative efforts of peasants and working-class individuals, many of whom eventually evolved into professional artists. Naïve art is characterized by self-taught artists who lack formal art education but have developed their unique creative expression and achieved a high artistic standard. The artworks often present unconventional proportions, perspectives, and some logical inconsistencies in form and space. These features represent the uninhibited imagination of the artists, resonating with other 20th-century art movements like Symbolism, Expressionism, Cubism, and Surrealism.

The Croatian Museum of Naïve Art is home to over 1,900 artworks, including paintings, sculptures, drawings, and prints. About 80 of these pieces, dating from the early 1930s to the 1980s, are exhibited to the public. The focus is primarily on Croatian artists, especially those from the renowned Hlebine School, along with a selection of esteemed independent artists. The museum also displays significant works from international artists in the naïve art genre.
