Dickson House, Kuwait City

Dickson House, Kuwait City

Situated in Kuwait City, the Dickson House Museum is a modest yet historically significant edifice. This building, adorned in white with blue trim, originally reflects Kuwaiti architectural style dating back to the early 19th century. It once served as the residence of Colonel Harold Dickson, a former British political agent, and his wife, Violet. Colonel Dickson acquired the house in 1929, which had previously belonged to a prominent Kuwaiti merchant, Jassim bin Muhammad bin Ali Al-Asfour.

The Dickson House Museum not only stands as a testament to Kuwait's rich history but also pays tribute to the enduring relationship between Kuwait and Britain. Within its walls, visitors can explore an extensive collection spanning from the 19th century to the 1960s, a period that encompasses Kuwait's time under British protectorate and its path to independence.

One of the museum's primary attractions is its extensive collection of photographs from the British protectorate era. These images offer a unique window into the historical events and daily life during this crucial period in Kuwait's history. Furthermore, a replica museum recreates the living quarters of the Dickson family, providing an intimate glimpse into their personal lives and their contributions to Kuwait.

Violet Dickson, affectionately known as Umm Saud, continued to reside in the house until 1990 after her husband's passing. Her presence in the house added to its historical significance, preserving the legacy of the Dickson family's affection for and contributions to Kuwait.

The Dickson House Museum, featuring 30 rooms dedicated to showcasing artworks and collectibles, symbolizes the enduring relationship between Kuwait and Britain and serves as a valuable resource for comprehending the historical backdrop of this relationship.
