Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium - Mara Beo, Dingle

Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium - Mara Beo, Dingle (must see)

Dingle Oceanworld Aquarium, also known as Mara Beo, is one of the main family-friendly attractions in Dingle and is home to Ireland’s largest collection of aquatic species. Established in 1996, it originally focused on native marine species found in Irish waters, but has since expanded to include a much wider range of aquatic life from around the world.

As visitors enter and begin moving through the first part of the aquarium, they encounter smaller marine displays that introduce seashore life, Amazon species, coral reef fish, and other aquatic creatures. This early section is arranged as a gradual introduction, with compact tanks showing species such as octopus, piranhas, tropical fish, and other colorful marine life. The route then builds toward larger exhibits, including the dramatic shark tank, where sand tiger sharks can be seen swimming close to the glass. This is one of the main focal points of the visit and also includes other large marine species, creating a stronger sense of scale after the smaller tanks.

Just after the shark tank, visitors reach one of the aquarium’s most popular areas: the Polar Penguin Experience. This section is slightly set off from the main flow, with its own entrance into a cold-climate setting designed for Gentoo penguins. Here, visitors can watch the penguins on land and in the water, with their armbands helping to identify individual birds. Nearby animal highlights also include otters, which add a livelier, more playful element to the aquarium route.

Further along, the experience becomes more interactive. The Touch Tank allows visitors to get close to selected marine creatures, including rays and native species, with staff guiding the experience and explaining how to handle the animals gently. The Ocean Tunnel offers a different perspective, allowing visitors to walk through a submerged viewing area and see fish moving above and around them.
