Museum am Dom, Trier

Museum am Dom, Trier

The Museum am Dom Trier (until 2010 Episcopal Cathedral and Diocesan Museum) is a museum of the Diocese of Trier, which has the task of researching the cultural and pious history of the Diocese of Trier and making it accessible to the public. In addition, the museum researches the late antique predecessors of Trier Cathedral, the oldest German episcopal church.

The collection includes i.a. Constantinian ceiling paintings that were found under the Trier Cathedral, liturgical vestments and utensils, images of Christ and Mary, icons and exhibits of religious folk art that document the pilgrimages to the Holy Robe that have been taking place since 1512.

Grave monuments are another focus of the collection. These include both reliefs of ancient grave monuments and pieces with early Christian grave inscriptions. The fragments of four outstanding bishop's tombs from Trier Cathedral and the Church of Our Lady date from the Middle Ages and the early modern period. The artistically most significant is certainly the tombstone created in 1462 by the sculptor Nikolaus Gerhaert von Leyden for Archbishop Jakob von Sierck.
