Dolac Market, Zagreb
Located north of Ban Jelačić Square in the oldest part of Zagreb, Dolac Market serves as the city’s main open-air marketplace. Officially opened in 1930, it was created to bring together smaller trading spots into a single, organized space. Set between the historic areas of Gradec and Kaptol, the market continues a long-standing tradition of exchange.
The market unfolds across two levels. Above, the open-air section is defined by its red umbrellas shading stalls filled with fresh fruits, vegetables, flowers, and homemade goods brought in by local farmers. The women stall managers, known as kumice, are long-standing figures of the market—part trader, part “godmother” within the daily rhythm of the city. A bronze statue of Kumica Barica by sculptor Stjepan Gračan stands near the entrance.
Below, the covered hall brings together butchers, fishmongers, and dairy sellers offering cheeses, cream, and preserved foods, including barrels of sauerkraut. Nearby, the renovated Ribarnica continues the tradition of fish trading.
Around the market, small bars and luncheonettes serve gableci, simple and affordable lunches, while terraces offer views over the steady flow of shoppers. Visitors can sample local flavors—from fresh cheese with paprika and onions to grilled sardines—while observing the market in motion. Set beneath the cathedral’s twin spires, Dolac remains a working space where everyday life, food, and tradition meet in a direct and accessible way.
