Don Kresge Memorial Museum, Birmingham

Don Kresge Memorial Museum, Birmingham

Tucked into the first-floor atrium of the Alabama Power Headquarters in downtown Birmingham, the Don Kresge Memorial Museum offers a nostalgic journey through the golden age of radio. Operated by the Alabama Historical Radio Society, this museum celebrates the cultural and technological impact of radio, especially in Alabama, where the airwaves helped shape generations.

The museum is named after Don Kresge, a retired General Electric engineer and passionate vintage radio enthusiast. In 1989, he founded the Alabama Historical Radio Society to bring together people of all ages who shared his love for old radios-whether for listening to Big Band broadcasts or getting their hands dirty restoring antique sets.

One of the museum’s focal points is WSY, Alabama Power Company’s pioneering radio station that began broadcasting in 1920. As the 127th licensed station in the U.S. by April 1922, WSY played a key role in bringing news, entertainment, and music into the homes of Alabamians-many of whom built their own radios using newspaper instructions from the Birmingham Age Herald.

Inside the museum, visitors can explore radios over 50 years old, including the rare engraved “Superflex” from 1927-one of only two known to exist. Displays show the rapid evolution of radio in the 1920s and highlight its peak era from the 1930s to 1950s, featuring classic sets and vintage ham radio gear that honors amateur operators' wartime and emergency contributions.

Whether you’re a longtime radio hobbyist or a curious newcomer, the Don Kresge Memorial Museum is a charming and educational stop. With its lovingly preserved equipment, historical significance, and passionate community, it offers a unique look at the airwaves that once connected a nation-and still spark curiosity today.
